FAQs
ALL is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow characterized by the rapid growth and spread of immature white blood cells (WBCs), which are also known as lymphoblasts or leukemic cells.
Here’s what happens in ALL: Too many immature WBCs are made in the bone marrow. The immature WBCs do not develop into healthy cells and cannot fight infections. They grow faster, live longer than normal cells, and make multiple copies of themselves, crowding out healthy cells that the body needs.
If untreated, all of those immature cells spill out into the bloodstream and begin to cause problems elsewhere in the body, such as in the spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, liver, testicles, and central nervous system.
